The SafetyCable is an idea and product of a Norwegian company called SafetyCable AS.
SafetyCable AS is a Norwegian company specializing in security solutions, both hardware and software, for PCs and other electrical equipment. The SafetyCable is one of their products, they also make firewalls and other security directed products.
The safetycable is as the name applies, a cable which protects your computer hardware or other appliances from theft.
Advanced security features:
The Cable comes bundled in a small package, with a one-page manual. It`s just a cable , so the one-page manual should do. But some subjects that could be troublesome to some people is not in the manual. And they could have included some more pictures in it showing the procedure of fastening the cable, but it`s not a big deal. There is also some warning stickers in the packet, to warn thiefes that your equpiement have an alarm mounted.
Getting the cable to work is pretty simple, just plug it in the psu and the power outlet. Since the cable has a "cable lock" to prevent the cable from being taken out of the psu it takes some strength in pushing the cable into your computers powersuply. The "cable lock" is a steel pin/hook which locks the cable completely from being withdrawn. If you want to take the cable out, you will have to unscrew a "pin" after you have entered your personal code. The built in battery will be completely charged in 48hours at the first time it is in use.
When the other end of the cable is put into the power outlet you can enter you code(6 digit at most). The cable is now protecting your gear, and it does a good job doing it. If someone tries to cut the cord or pull it out of the power outlet the cable will sense that its been cut, and sound the alarm at roughly 112dB. Loud enough that is! Theres a power loop that measures against a resistor. If there is a power failure the cable will still be in function for two to three days before the built in battery is empty.
Although this cable is working very nicely. I got no real negative critics for it at all had it not been for one thing. After using the cable for some weeks I discovered that the cable, while on, made a small "humming" noise. Not very loud , but loud enough to hear it in a totally quiet room that is not to big. This could be a problem if you use the cable in the same room that you sleep in. But for most people, this is not a problem.
This is not a mayor fallback in my opinion, as this cable is not so often used by "normal" users, but by companies. And it will not make any difference for them at all.
The SafetyCable is a bit to expensive for the normal user at 797,- NOK (roughly 70$ - 100$ depending on where you order the cable from). But is a good investment if you have very expensive equipment. I recommend this cable especially to companies with expensive servers or other appliances, for them, this could be a cheap and very effective way to keep thief's out.
