Wrecked CPU ??????

One of our regurarly readers sent us a mail regarding his PIII450  that suddenly stopped working ...... when he booted the memory was counted -- and thereafter nothing.... he could not get into the bios before his system hung..... he asked us if we wanted to take a look at the CPU since he's a student and couldn't afford a new CPU at this time...

This CPU has been in a watercooling/peltier system for nearly a year : running nicely at 630MHz with L2 set to 1. There have never been signs of condensation -nor has the system been leaking.

Still we found corrosion between two of the contacts on one of the corechips :

See the white stuff which the needle is pointing at ?? : this was actually shortening the cachechip rendering the CPU useless........ We used the needle to get away as much as possible before we cleaned all the contacts with electrical cleaner and thereafter we used compressed air to blow away the remainings...... Afterwards the CPU booted fine ! A little paint job with electrical varnish -- and this CPU was just as new again......

Bottom line : before you throw away your "destroyed" CPU check all contactpoints for shortening ....... We saved this guy from purchasing a new CPU just by looking thoroughly at it........
